有 哪 位 朋 友 了 解 Suzuki Piano Method 的? 这 套 教 学 法 有 什 么 利 弊? 5 岁 的 孩 子 采 用 这 套 教 学 法 合 适 吗?Just read about the method last week... From the impression,it's a good method. It promotes the idea of learning an instrument is fun and focus on good muscal sense(and taste). However, there's a few points you need to consider: 1. The Suzuki Method requires more parental involve in the early stage when comparing with the traditional method. 2. The method does not introduce music reading until the end of first book (the underlying concept is that in a natural mode of language learing, you learn to speak before you learn to read). This is not necessary a bad thing if the child is well taken care of. 3. The method works on younger child... I suspect the result would not be to good with children starting to learn at age over 6. 4. The most important point. You need to find a teacher who's familiar with the method and with good musical background. The method requires good teacher and good resources to teach successfully. Whilst comparing it with traditional method, it relies quite heavyly on the teacher and parents gudiances. And I'm not very sure with the availability of the books and tapes in your area.. It happens that my sister and I talked about Suzuki method on ICQ last week. (By the way, she's in Hong Kong) She's working on a strange project that investigating the viability of using the method in IT teaching. She browsed through the piano method book and commented "it's fun and it'd be good to learn the piano that way". However, the books and tapes of the method is rather difficult to obtain in Hong Kong. Anyway, I think the method itself is good.(if you're open-minded enough for different approach of piano-learning) But it's rather difficult to obtain the material and find a teacher who knows what he/she is doing. Thanks a lot for your analysis. My daughter will attend an Assessment interview for Suzuki method tomorrow. Now I have some knowledge about this pedagogy. It will really help me to understand the assessment results. It seems this method is more suitable for a child starting her musical training under 4 years old (I doubt my daughter is a bit late). There are some piano teachers and piano schools using this method in their teaching here. As what you said the teachers did have specific qualification in this method. All of them have special training on Suzuki method and some even hold the degree on Piano Pedagogy. That worths trying since the area you are in have schools and teachers with the required training... just curious, how's the tuition fee when you're comparing this method with the traditional method? I like the underlying idea of Suzuki-sensei:every child has the ability to play well on an instrument... talent is not dominating factor to determinate success when you're comparing it with the environment and encouragement(but not forcing them into endless dull practise) given to the child... (heheh...almost saying there're no bad students, but only bad teacher and parents)Hi there, don’t make me nervous. If my daughter doesn’t become a pianist in the future, it will be all my fault. OK, just kidding. About the fee: A registered piano teacher: Beginning level $18-22 per 30 min Registered piano teacher with special qualification (such as Suzuki method, Kelly Kirby , holding higher degree , good reputation ) : Beginning level: $25-30 per 30 min. I don’t know much about the price for advanced level student.heheh... don't worry, in my opinion... sending a child to those musical lessons is for some cultural enrichment(I guess 6 years old is age of discovery and the time to explore different things available to them-drawing, books, sports, music. I think I discovered the joy of watching TV around that time..HAHA) and have FUN (for both you and your child) but not with the vision of training a future pianist. I guess it's quite difficult for the parents... hoping the kids to excel in something and becoming somebody and earning big bucks in the end. (start to wonder whether I would become the ones who yell at they kids,"Go to practise the piano/do your homework!!" in 10-15years time... *shudder*)
