If you want to be a pianist, you are too old if you start after 5-7 years old. If you just want to enjoy yourself, that's a different story. Anyway, my piano teacher said I'm her only adult student who doesn't quit after 1 year of studying...yet.. and I'm struggling. It's very hard for adult students to make progress fast enough to justify their level of effort.

dear Mr.neo: so, may i know your age ? hah, kidding. but i am 24 now and know little about the music theory, i really doubt that whether i could go down that way once took a try. and , you know, it's really a sad feeling when you , a piano music addic have to face the truth that you can do nothing about the notes of those beautiful rhythms. but i love piano music so much!!! i am even thouched a lot anytime i go nearby a piano and hit one or more keys in the piano shoppes!! i just can't help excited about that sound form the piano, even its just a single note!

----------------
I really share the same feeling with you, neo. Perhaps we adults have to spend double or even more efforts to make half progress as children do. Although comprehesion is important, good memory and flexible fingers are more required in learning of playing piano. If we confess and face it, we may enjoy the "struggle", which, is what I always say to myself.

To SophiaJue: If you love music this much, definitely you should give yourself a try, now. The longer you wait, the harder it will be for you to start. I'm 32 now...much older than you. I started taking piano lessons last June. For the last year I spent almost all my spare time practicing piano. I feel that the music theory is not a big problem for adults; it only takes a few weeks for you to learn enough note reading skill to get yourself started. Getting started is easier for adults than for kids, but after 6 months, many people will hit the bottle neck and feel their progress is very slow and may even give up. But think about this: there is nothing you can do for your past; you can never go back to 5 again. The only thing you can control is your future. Today is the first day of the rest of your life, so start from today. I feel frustrations very often, but I don't want to give up. If I quit now, when I retire at 65 and still can't play piano, I will hate myself. Your effort will be rewared in the future. Also, litsen to music whenever possible; it will keep your love and passion for music alive. Actually, there was a pianist who started playing at 24 and became a pianist at 36. So it's not absolute that an adult can't do well; but you need to be prepared for more tear and sweat.

You'd better everyday, or at least every 2 days, IMHO, if you want to be able to play instead of playing. I guess you are in grade 6 in secondary school. I'm living in a hall in the University of Hong Kong. Most halls in HKU have music room, renting for free if you live there. As an exchange, you have to be able to stand those noisy and naughty hallmates and endless hall activities.

Do you mean Paderewski, who was once PM of Poland? http://www.usc.edu/dept/polish_music/composer/paderewski.html I have several his recordings on Chopin's work, which he regarded as his best performace. He's kind of genius. I believed even if I had copied what he did with 120% as much enthusiasm, I woundn't be a pianist. But I agree with what you say, if effort paid, we will be able to harvest one autumn in future. I'm 21 now. With all my discontinuous study time together, I've practiced for 6 years. I have no time to find myself a teacher and follow his/her pace, so I receive guidiance from books, my intuition and recently, this forum. I feel quite moved at your post. But I have some personal questions to ask you, if you don't mind my abrupt manner. I'm still a university student, so I have plenty time to practice. But I could envisige that one day when I have my own job, my family to take care of, how could I find time to practice as I do now? How do you manage it now? How did you find the balance between all these? I've thought about the question for some time and I'm serious about it. Hope to see your anwser. You can email me (see my personal information) if you don't want to make it public. Thank you.

我快25岁了,正准备开始学钢琴,大家的发言鼓励了我!谢谢你们!

Oh, there have HK people, I am so happy. I am a repeater of F.5, I think I don't have "power" to study in University.~ I think I can practice every 2 days. Thanks for you opinions. Do you study pinao?? p.s. Could u tell me what is IMHO

To Mehve, Actually I have a lot more free time now than when I was in school, so balancing my job and practicing piano is no problem for me. I went to college in China and then came to US for graduate study, got my Master degree in computer science and Ph.D in computational physics here. I used to study and do research 12-14 hours a day back then. After graduation, I joined a big software company in Atlanta 6 years ago, worked as a developer for 3 years, then moved to system architecture and project management area. This year the high tech industry is in trouble and capital spending is practically put on hold, so I only need to spend 2-3 hours a day doing some research and prototyping, and go back home at 4PM. So I think for you finding an easy and high paying job is the key. Good luck!

dear Mr. neo, you don;t know how moved i was when reading your words, and it's my honnor to have too! thank you so much! i can't agree more with you, you said,Also, litsen to music whenever possible; it will keep your love and passion for music alive. everytime i listen to the piano music of the Greensleeves performed by 理查德-克莱德曼 and a sheet piano music song from a secret garden i will say again and agian, oh, i have to play it myself someday!(as for 理查德-克莱德曼 i don;t know what comments the other pianists would give to him, but , i just have a good feeling of his playing, hah, am i only in the ABC of the piano music? maybe) what's more, your attitude toward the piano learning is kinda the attitude to life! yes, what would be the sadder thing other than the regretion in one's memories! i do learn something here, and it's more that the piano learning. i know different guys in the world but have the same feelings, ten years elder than me maybe, younger than me mabye. i know nothing would be a crazy idea,if only you're goona have! (haha, it seems what i am saying are straying the topic we're focusing on .) ok, thanks again!(your english is cool!)
